Welcome to Alliances for Sustainability! ALISOS: A new model for the wellbeing of the planet
Latin America is 13.76% of the total surface areas of the entire earth’s continents and its 569 million inhabitants represent 8.16% of the population. Although its dimensions do not appear big in proportion to the rest of the world this region and its people have a challenge to achieve a sustainable development for the Planet, but why? South America is one of the largest dispensers in the 21st century, it has numerous natural assets, and it is one the largest producers of minerals and energy resources. It also has a demographic advantage: the average age is 27 years old, which means that its dependent population (the elderly and children) is a minority and the majority is economically productive, this offers new possibilities for political and social change. Last but not least, the region has a cultural diversity which offers a range of visions of sustainability that can pave the way for key transformations. With this in mind, ALISOS seeks to promote partnerships and dialogue between different sectors and actors from Latin America, in a hope of encouraging a culture of sustainability which includes social, environmental, economic and political issues. A better life for future generations
Many experts in various fields have already said: That without a doubt, if we carry on this way in 20 years’ time we will need at least one more planet for us to be able to survive. In this globalized world consumption levels have reached such a point that we are using more than what the Earth is capable of producing. We need to review our lifestyle and modify consumer patterns into a more sustainable model in which resources can be renewed by nature and thus allowing the Earth to sustain us without exceeding its capacity.
ALISOS’s task is to promote social and cultural change in the region to achieve a development consistent with the principles of sustainability. These principles point to the necessity of meeting the needs of the present, while thinking of the future.
For ALISOS the sustainability of countries and their territories is only possible if States, business world and citizens take on the responsibility. Latin America has the potential to respond to this cultural change. ALISOS is confident that together we can make this planet sustainable. This is an invitation to be part of this change. [More...]
